It is good to know the history of acai berry if we are going to get beneficial effects of this miraculous fruit. Acai berry was known to the Brazilian natives as “ica-cai” which in their language means “fruit that cries”

Why it is called Acai: As per the legend there was an Amazonian girl Iaca whose father was the chief of the tribe living in those forests. As there was shortage of food, chief ordered all the children be sacrificed. When Iaca bore child, the order was applicable to her child as well. Her child was killed and she mourned her death for many days until the night when she heard a child crying.

She looked for the child and found her child next to a palm tree covered in dark purple fruit. Next morning people of the tribe found her dead body holding the tree. The chief ordered his men to harvest the fruit of that palm tree. They ate the fruit which satisfied their hunger and gave them new energy. Since then the fruit has been known as Acai which is Iaca spelled backwards.

Since then Acai berry has been known to Brazilian tribes as a life giving fruit. It was discovered by the western world in early nineties. The popularity of this fruit as we know is because of its weight loss properties.
